Knox is the seat of Starke County, and its downtown sits where two state highways meet. U.S. 35 runs north and south through the county, linking the Bass Lake area to the LaPorte County line, and it passes straight through the middle of Knox. State Road 8 crosses town heading east from La Crosse toward Plymouth. For several blocks downtown, SR-8 and US-35 share the same roadway before splitting apart on the east side of town. That overlap packs turning traffic, cross streets, and pedestrians near the courthouse square into a small stretch of road, and it produces a steady share of rear-end and turning crashes.
State Road 10 runs a few miles north of Knox, connecting North Judson to the Bass Lake area and feeding drivers onto US-35. Traffic headed to or from the lake often merges onto US-35 north of town, mixing local drivers with lake traffic and visitors who do not know the road.
