The Occupational Safety & Health Administration notes that falls are a leading cause of injuries on construction sites. What are some of the prime causes of such falls?
One cause is unprotected holes in a floor. Open floor holes are to be guarded or covered immediately during new construction. The cover should support twice the weight of a worker and the worker’s equipment and materials.
Another prime cause of construction site injuries is improperly constructed scaffolding. Scaffold can collapse if not constructed to meet the weight that it is expected to carry. Moreover, scaffolding should be inspected daily.
A third frequent cause of construction worker falls is a fall from a ladder. To prevent ladder falls, work should be accomplished from aerial lifts, or properly supported scaffolds and platforms. If a ladder must be used, it should be thoroughly inspected and well-matched to employee weight, task, and location.
