Toy safety should be a priority for every American. Certainly parents of small children are in the best position to limit a child’s access to a dangerous and defective toy. But all of us, whenever we consider buying a toy as a gift, can with a little investigation, find the information needed to avoid dangerous toys on the market.
In 2008 the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act was signed into law. The act can be found at www.cpsc.gov. Of particular importance is a provision in the law that requires manufacturers and importers of children’s products to certify in writing, based on test results from a CPSC-accepted laboratory, that their children’s products comply with applicable children’s product safety rules. The CPSIA deals with issues such as lead paint on toys, tracking labels on products, truth in safety labeling, and truth in advertising. The Act also addresses infant crib safety, as well as the safety of strollers, walkers, swings, and bassinets. The Act mandates that importers as well as manufacturers follow ASTM F963 standards addressing ingestion and inhalation dangers, toxic substances, cords and straps, and securing child access to battery compartments.
