Preventing Pedestrian Injuries

Whether walking, jogging, or running, when a pedestrian is involved in a traffic crash, the consequences can be serious and fatal for the pedestrian. According to the CDC, 5,376 pedestrians were killed in collisions with motor vehicles in 2015 in the U.S. For those not killed, almost 129,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for non-fatal crash-related injuries in 2015. These injuries can range from bone fractures, to traumatic brain injuries, to degloving injuries, to paralysis.

What are common causes for these pedestrian traffic crash injuries? Drivers often fail to yield to pedestrians crossing the street in crosswalks or at intersections; particularly, drivers fail to see a pedestrian when making a turn. Many pedestrian accidents are caused by distracted drivers who are either paying attention to a cell phone instead of the road or impaired drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Unfortunately, the trend of people being distracted by electronic devices not only affects drivers, but more pedestrians are paying attention to their electronic devices instead of their surroundings. Whenever you are a pedestrian, it is important to keep in mind some basic safety tips: (a) increase your visibility at night by carrying a flashlight and wearing reflective clothing, (b) walk on a sidewalk or path when available, or otherwise walk on the shoulder facing traffic, and (c) when possible, cross the street at a designated crosswalk or intersection.
