Driving Behaviors Are Getting Worse

A recent survey conducted by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and shared to their members about the behaviors drivers exhibited before and during the pandemic was a bit shocking. And sadly it seems those risky behaviors are responsible for an increase in auto-related accidents.

Let’s take a look at some of the statistics AAA shared…

These are increases in behaviors above what those same people reported prior to the pandemic. (How AAA conducted this survey or what scientific means they used was not revealed, so these numbers can’t be substantiated by us…however, we feel based on what other media outlets are also sharing that these statistics are close to accurate.)

  • Speeding 10+ mph over speed limit on a residential street is up 51%
  • Reading a text while driving is up 50%
  • Running a red light on purpose is up 45%
  • Changing lanes aggressively is up 43%
  • Not wearing a seatbelt is up 21%
  • Driving while alcohol impaired is up 13%
  • Driving while high or using cannabis is up 13%

Kind of scary isn’t it? And you might be thinking that the alcohol and drug use behaviors might be a bit higher, considering the pandemic caused many to suffer depression and loneliness. But as you can see that’s not the case at all. Negligent and reckless driving top the list. Drivers are in such a hurry to get to whereever they’re going that speeding and running red lights seem justified. And texting while driving is becoming the norm it seems.

Unfortunately, those poor driving behaviors are responsible for an estimated 39,000 people dying in auto accidents last year.

So why do we share these statistics? We share them to hopefully get you to think about your own behaviors while driving and to think about other drivers on the road. An accident can change the course of someone’s life, and in some cases end it.

Here’s a few safety tips to keep in mind:

Buckle Up – seat belts do save lives.

Drive Sober – that means no alcohol or drugs

No Distractions – turn the cell phone off

Drive Speed Limit – an accident is not worth trying to save a few minutes

Have A Level Head – stay cool and maintain safe driving practices

If you were injured by the negligence of another, it is critical that you consult with an attorney who has extensive trial litigation experience. If your case cannot be settled, it is crucial that your attorney understand how to prepare your case for trial and how to win your case.
