Forget The Jury, We’ll Just Flip A Coin

Flipping a coin is typically something we think about when choosing which team gets to go first. It’s a game of heads versus tails. The winner of the correct guess picks whether the team kicks or receives. Flipping a coin is not something we consider when dealing out justice.

Yet, that’s exactly what happened recently when two Roswell, Georgia police officers arrested a woman for speeding. Heads, you’re under arrest. Tails, you’re free to go. Sadly, the woman being arrested had no idea that the police officers were doing this. The police officers’ body cams recorded the whole event. The body cameras showed the Georgia officers laughing as they used a coin-flip app on their squad car computer to decide whether to detain the women or let her go.

The officer failed to record the actual speed of the woman who admittedly said she was late for work and might have been going a little fast. The officers then decided to charge the woman with going too fast for conditions and reckless driving. They then, based on the coin flip results, arrested the woman, handcuffed her and put her in the back of the patrol car.

Well, the news of the woman’s arrest due to the flip of a coin has gone viral on social media. The two officers involved have been reassigned to administrative leave and an internal investigation has been started.

The woman who was arrested for speeding upon finding out the truth said, “Wow, these people put my freedom in the hands of a coin flip, and that’s disgusting.”

So why do I share this story with you?

I share it to give you an insight into how some people try to manipulate the system. They want a quick way out. Or an easy way out. They would rather put the fate of someone on a flip of coin then actually do their jobs correctly.

Imagine if you’re in a courtroom and the judge says, “forget the jury, we’ll just flip a coin.” Sure, it would definitely make court cases speed along, but, that’s not what our legal system is about. We need justice. The truth needs to be told.
