Both roads carry a steady mix of commuters, delivery trucks, and visitors headed toward the Dunes, and traffic on U.S. 20 tends to move fast where it enters Miller from the west.
Where Crashes Happen in Miller Beach
Inside the neighborhood, Lake Street is the main route to the water. It runs north from U.S. 12 and U.S. 20 straight to Marquette Park, a roughly 159-acre lakefront park built around the historic Marquette Park Pavilion. On warm weekends, Lake Street and Grand Boulevard fill with cars looking for parking near the beach, and drivers pulling in and out of angled spots add to the congestion. Pedestrians crossing to reach the sand share that stretch of road with circling traffic, raising the risk of a low-speed but still serious crash.
The Indiana Toll Road, Interstate 90, does not run through Miller Beach, but its nearest exits sit just southwest and south of the neighborhood. Drivers get off at highway speed and merge onto local streets, then slow quickly for stop signs and pedestrians near the beach. County Line Road, marking the border with Porter County, brings in drivers unfamiliar with Miller’s streets and rail crossings, especially in summer.
