There are approximately 11 million children in child care programs across the country. When people drop their kids off at daycare before heading to work, they trust their children will be protected and kept safe. Unfortunately, some daycare injuries can turn into serious or even fatal situations. In Indiana, the Indianapolis Star reported that from 2009 to March 2014, there were 31 deaths at Indiana daycares, 10 of which occurred in licensed child care programs, 5 of which occurred in unlicensed care, and 16 occurred in illegal care centers.
State and federal law set standards for daycare facilities with the goal to eliminate hazards and ensure that daycare employees are following proper safety guidelines in order to protect the children. These standards are only good if they’re being put into practice and enforced.
Many daycare injuries can be attributed to daycare negligence through inadequate staffing and supervision of children. It’s also important that daycares work proactively to eliminate hazards such as loose handrails, wet floors, falling objects, unsafe and defective toys, as well as bookshelves and televisions that could tip-over onto a child. Additionally, certain items such as cleaning chemicals, medications, and sharp objects should be stored safely out of reach from children.
